Cholesterol & Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Ireland today.

The good news is that 80% of heart disease is preventable simply by changing your lifestyle. There are lots of things that can affect your risk of heart disease. These include having high blood pressure, being overweight, getting older and being male.

Some things you can’t change – like age and sex – but some things you can. Cholesterol is one of the changes that can be made!

Did you know?

  • If you walk for 30 minutes per day that you reduce your chances of having heart disease by 30%. If you increase this yo 1 hour a day, you reduce your chances of having heart disease by 50%.
  • Any exercise is good as long as you are breathing a little faster - you should be able to talk but not sing! - and you should be getting warmer. 
  • Walking is excellent exercise but cycling, swimming, running, aerobics, skipping, anything will help.

Check with your doctor before you start any new intense exercise and stop immediately if your get any chest pain.
